  • If you have larger items that won't fit in the cart, please call our office to arrange for pickup.
  • You may request a larger cart size if you have extra garbage every month.

The driver left a note saying my yard debris cart is too heavy. What should I do?
The arm on the truck cannot lift a cart that weighs more than 220 pounds.
If your cart is too heavy to lift:

  • Please remove at least one third of the contents of the cart and any unacceptable items (i.e. dirt, sod, rocks, stumps, or lumber) before calling us to request a call back.
  • Talk with your neighbors; they may be willing to let you put properly prepared yard debris in their carts.
Often, dirt or sod is what makes the cart too heavy. Dirt and sod cannot be composted and are not accepted in our yard debris program. When weeding, please shake as much dirt off the roots as possible. You must remove all dirt, sod, rocks and other unacceptable items from the cart before we can service it as yard debris.

Why should I recycle?

  • It helps keep our air and water clean.
  • It conserves natural resources such as timber, water and minerals.
  • It helps preserve valuable land for farming, recreation and wildlife.
  • It saves energy and decreases emissions of greenhouse gasses.
  • It protects U.S. manufacturing jobs and increases U.S. competitiveness
  • It prevents pollution caused by manufacturing products from virgin materials.
  • It is easy and it makes you feel proud to be doing your part.
  • We have a responsibility to our children to keep Oregon clean and healthy.

What happens to my recycling after it leaves the curb?
All of the recycling that Newberg Garbage & Recycling Service collects is hauled to a Material Recovery Facility, called a MRF. There, the recyclables are sorted by type: paper, plastic, tin, or aluminum and sold to processors and manufacturers who use the materials to make new products.

Why can't I put glass in my mixed recycling cart?
Glass is easily broken during the collection process. When glass breaks inside your cart or in our recycling truck, the small pieces mix with the recyclables and contaminate the entire load. Therefore, the MRF's won't accept recycling that has glass mixed in.

What can I do with my glass?
We provide several recycling depots in and around Newberg for you to drop off glass bottles and jars. See our Depot Recycling section for more information.

How does my yard debris get recycled?
All of the yard debris Newberg Garbage & Recycling Service collects is hauled to a local facility where it is processed into compost and used in landscaping and gardens. For more questions about the facility, talk to our recycling coordinator.

What happens if my yard debris is not prepared correctly?
Soil and animal waste can introduce organisms and fungi that would thrive in the compost treatment facility - and contaminate the finished compost.
Treated wood adds chemicals that are harmful to the compost organisms, and to plants.
Plastic bags cause complications in the machinery that grinds and turns the compost. The slow breakdown of plastics also releases chemicals into the soil that are harmful to plants.

What are the benefits of recycling Yard Debris?
Recycled yard debris is called compost.

    Compost and you can:
  • Reduce your waste by 25%.
  • Help keep useable materials out of the landfill.
    Use compost, and you can:
  • Help soil retain water, and cut water use. Compost promotes healthy plant growth and can reduce your use of fertilizers:
    • Fallen leaves contain 50-80% of the nutrients that a tree extracts from the soil. By composting them, you help the soil replenish itself.
  • Discourage pests and cut down on pesticide use.

What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?
Anything labeled as toxic, flammable, corrosive, reactive, infectious, or radioactive can threaten personal health and safety and is therefore considered hazardous household waste.
Common hazardous wastes found in the home include: paints in liquid form, paint thinner and stripper, weed killer, pesticides and herbicides, brake fluid, gasoline and diesel fuel, antifreeze and solvents.
These items may not be put in your garbage or recycling cart, container or drop box. These items are not accepted at the Newberg Transfer Site or at any of our recycling depots.

What can I do with my leftover paint?
Liquid paint is not accepted in garbage or recycling carts, containers, or drop boxes.
Oil based paints, stains, paint thinners, and paint strippers are household hazardous waste and must be taken to a HHW facility or collection event.
Small quantities of latex paint may be dried in the can by simply leaving the lid off or by adding a drying agent such as kitty litter or shredded newspaper. Once the latex paint is completely dry, it may be placed in a NGS garbage container.
Large quantities of liquid latex paint must be taken to a HHW facility or collection event.

What can I do with my household hazardous waste (HHW)?
Yamhill County Solid Waste sponsors two Household Hazardous Waste Events each year. These events are held on the third weekend of May and October. In 2009, there will be one event held in Newberg in May and one event held in McMinnville in October. Both events are open to all Yamhill County residents, at no charge.
