Have a Merry Christmas and a Wasteless New Year
The Newberg Graphic, December 24, 2005
Here are a few tips to help you make the holidays a little "greener" this year!
Reduce Holiday Waste
- Avoid gifts that will be thrown out on Christmas day, buy things that the recipient needs and will use. Consider giving experiences, such as music lessons or theater tickets.
- When selecting gifts for children, consider durable toys that can be passed along to relatives or friends as the child grows.
- Instead of Styrofoam peanuts, secure your packages with air popped popcorn. The recipient can compost the popcorn or feed it to the birds! Just remember, no butter or salt!
- Buy a live tree that can be planted outside when the holiday season ends.
Reuse for the Holidays
- Reuse packing materials, gift wrap, and ribbons.
- Consider regifting! If you received a gift last year that you've never used, pass it along to a friend who would use it or donate it to a local charity that is collecting gifts for those in need.
- Make the packaging part of the gift! For example, wrap homemade cookies in a tea towel inside a decorative basket. Once the cookies are gone, the "packaging" can be enjoyed through out the year.
- Buy local! When you shop at local businesses, your money gets "reused" to support the local economy.
Recycle
- Recycle used wrapping paper. No foiled or plastic coated papers, Mylar, or tissue. Tape is ok, but bows and ribbons are not recyclable.
- Christmas trees can be recycled in the curbside yard debris program in Newberg and Dundee. Cut the tree into pieces that will easily fit in your yard debris cart. If you don't have curbside yard debris service, bring your tree to the Yard Debris Depot on Wynooski St for a fee. Please no metal, flocking, or tinsel.
- SP Newsprint accepts trees at no charge, 7 days a week during daylight hours. Please no metal, flocking, or tinsel.
- Don't forget to compost your kitchen scraps during holiday feasting! For info on starting a compost bin or worm composter, pick up a brochure at the Newberg Garbage Service office.
